IRS Opens Address Change Portal for Advance CTC Payments – Did You Know?
The IRS has launched a new address change feature in the Child Tax Credit (CTC) Update Portal, making it easier for families to manage their advance monthly CTC payments.
👉 This tool is especially important for households in Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg, and across the U.S. who receive their advance CTC payments by paper check. If your mailing address is outdated, your check may be delayed or even returned to the IRS.
💳 Families who receive direct deposit payments should also update their mailing address through the portal. The IRS will use the new address to send essential tax documents, including Letter 6419 in January. This letter is required to accurately complete your 2021 federal tax return and claim any remaining Child Tax Credit.
💡 Remember: The advance CTC payments typically cover about 50% of your total credit. You’ll need Letter 6419 to reconcile the rest when you file.
The Child Tax Credit Update Portal also lets you:
-
Switch from paper check to direct deposit
-
Update your bank account information
-
Opt out of advance payments for the remainder of the year
📅 Deadlines matter: Changes submitted by August 30 will apply to the September 15 payment. Changes after that will affect the October 15, November 15, and December 15 payments.
